Pileio, Giuseppe (2022) Lecture 6: the spin Hamiltonian. In, Pileio, Giuseppe (ed.) Lectures On Spin Dynamics: The Theoretical Minimum. (RSC eTextbook Collection) Royal Society of Chemistry, pp. 70-86. (doi:10.1039/9781837670871-00070).
Abstract
In this lecture, I discuss the generic form of the nuclear spin Hamiltonian using the irreducible spherical tensor formalism presented in Lecture 4. I use the argument that the direct interaction between the spin and the static field is often the largest one, to approximate the spin Hamiltonian into a simpler form by invoking the perturbation theory that is presented in Lecture 5 (secular approximation). I then derive the explicit form of the Hamiltonians that represent each of the most frequently encountered interactions in spin dynamics. Finally, I discuss the effect of molecular motions and derive the form of the nuclear spin Hamiltonian in isotropic liquids.
