On the teaching of design considerations for secure learning technologies supporting the right to object to data collection in schools
Assessing the attainment of learning outcomes in a no-prerequisites undergraduate module on secure systems architecture presents many challenges and opportunities. In particular, both catering for, and unlocking the potential of, a diverse group of students at a teaching-intensive institution, enrolled in programmes from various disciplines (e.g. law, computer science or cyber security).
The assessment brief is to research and prototype for the design of a secure system architecture for a loosely-defined scenario. In 2021-22 the given brief was to design a secure system architecture for a learning technology that supports the right to object to data collection in schools. The practical assessment encouraged creative solutions to practical issues related to the design of a secure system under their own discipline lens.
This talk covers issues of interdisciplinarity, and how students were involved in defining the context, establishing bridging terminology from learning technologies, cyber security and GDPR (in particular, the right to object). By being encouraged to look at the tensions around the design from multiple perspectives, rather than a technologically-deterministic one, students were able to identify that the right to object is often impaired not merely under the lawfulness of processing principle, but also through coerced consent. Still, the technological lens is very important too, in particular for issues of data management and vulnerabilities.
Students' range of creativity on the interdisciplinary aspects of the use of learning technologies in schools supporting the right to object was manifested in a variety of prototypes, some of which are presented in this talk.
