Peritonitis of undetermined aetiology following laparoscopic surgery

Peritonitis of undetermined aetiology following laparoscopic surgery
Peritonitis of undetermined aetiology following laparoscopic surgery

We present an unusual case of peritonitis of undetermined aetiology following a simple laparoscopic surgical procedure. This patient presented with a clinical picture similar to bowel injury, after laparoscopic surgery. However, no trauma to the bowel could be found despite a diligent search. Instead, purulent turbid material was seen in the peritoneal cavity with no evidence of faecal material. The patient responded very well to antibiotic treatment, without any long-term sequelae. The value of prophylactic antibiotics in laparoscopic surgery is discussed.
