Vibrational spectroscopy for rapid bedside medical diagnosis
Vibrational spectroscopy for rapid bedside medical diagnosis
Vibrational spectroscopy, in the form of Raman and Mid-IR spectroscopies, is a powerful, label-free technique that can identify and quantify individual components of a complex chemical mixture which makes it ideal for analysis of biosamples. Vibrational spectroscopic measurements are quick, simple and easy to perform, making the screening rapid and can be employed for the diagnosis of multiple conditions at once. We explore the use of vibrational spectroscopy for rapid point of care diagnosis. As an example, we study the diagnosis of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome of preterm babies. We are developing on-chip spectroscopy using low-cost and highly sensitive disposable chips. Together with machine learning, it will further simplify biomarker detection in the critical care for rapid and early diagnosis of disease.
