All data are at trust level and are publicly available through the NHS Digital platform. This dataset does not contain any patient identifiers. Relationship between files, if important for context: None Additional related data collected that was not included in the current data package: None If data was derived from another source, list source: NHS Digital (see link above and below) If there are there multiple versions of the dataset, list the file updated, when and why update was made: This was the final version of the dataset, used for data analyses. Results are detailed in the manuscript. Previous versions contain raw variables directly derived from NHS Digital datasets. -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Workforce data derived from: https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/nhs-workforce-statistics# Bed occupancy and availibility data: https://www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/bed-availability-and-occupancy/ Hospital trust characteristics dataset: https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/estates-returns-information-collection Mortality dataset: https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/ci-hub/summary-hospital-level-mortality-indicator-shmi Methods for processing the data: Data were linked from the cources detailed above and analysed in R software. We calculated ratios of occupied bed-per-staff as detailed in the methods of the manuscript (submitted), and trust size by dividing the number of available beds (day and night) per trust into tertiles to classify trusts as small, medium and large trusts. Software- or Instrument-specific information needed to interpret the data, including software and hardware version numbers: We performed data linkage, cleaning, coding, and analyses in R statistical software, version 4.0.2 (R Core Team, R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria), using the lme4 and glmer packages (v1.1-27.1, Bates et al, 2015), and the plm package (v2.4-3, Croissant et al, 2021) Standards and calibration information, if appropriate: Not applicable. Environmental/experimental conditions: Not applicable. Describe any quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: Data processing and analyses was supervised and validated by two statisticians, including a senior statistician. People involved with sample collection, processing, analysis and/or submission: Same as author list -------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION -------------------------- Number of variables: 135 Number of cases/rows: 536 Variable list, defining any abbreviations, units of measure, codes or symbols used: Hospital trust data are shown in columns B, DT-EF Number of staff at each hospital trust per year (row) are shown in columns D-O and BE-CM Number of beds are shown in columns P-Y Ratios of staff per bed are shown in columns Z-AJ and DC-DQ Ratio of bed per staff are shown in columns AK-AU and CN-DB SHMI (mortality) data are shown in columns AV-BD Missing data codes: NA = missing data Specialized formats or other abbreviations used: Not applicable
