A bibliometric analysis of Zakat literature from 1964 TO 2021
A bibliometric analysis of Zakat literature from 1964 TO 2021
Along with the growing interest and importance of Islamic economics in today’s world, Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic economics as the first journal in this discipline plays an enormous role to provide the insights of current practice and to shape the development of Islamic economics literature. It has started the first publication four decades ago in 1983 and indexed by Scopus for the first time in 2009. This study aims to identify the significant trends of this journal and to trace the development from its first Scopus-indexed issue in 2009 until 31 August 2022. In doing so, a total of 331 articles are reviewed using Rstudio, VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel. The results of this bibliometric analysis suggest that on average there is a growing trend of publication and citation in this journal. Despite the dominance of Saudi Arabia where this journal is originally initiated, this upward trend is also contributed by those Muslim-minority countries, including United Kingdom and United States. This study also identified eight major research themes and invites future scholars to conduct more quantitative articles to unearth the empirical evidence of the existing practices of Islamic economics and finance, particularly halal industry which has emerged as a growingly attractive sector. Moreover, future researchers could also consider establishing a link between principles of Islamic economics and various global agenda such as climate change, gender diversity, and net zero carbon. Lastly, this study also suggests editorial team of this journal to provide an English translation of Arabic articles for expanding the coverage and enhancing the citation index; and to pay attention on the filling of metadata and the indexing of the articles.
