“[Acting] is a mysterious job that has mostly to do with energy.” – Riccardo Scamarcio.

This chapter seeks to account for the articulation of the different professional identities of one of the most prominent Italian actors of the 21st century, Riccardo Scamarcio. More specifically, it considers Scamarcio’s career as a careful articulation of energy, an energy which I will trace in relation both to performance style and to star persona. This energy first propelled Scamarcio to stardom in teen movies, enabling his transition to a heartthrob that became a divo. It is further developed by Scamarcio’s presence in auteur cinema, where energy is given a wider meaning in relation to Italian cultural history, and in Hollywood, where it allows him a special place in roles in action cinema. Finally, I want to consider how this accrual of energy has allowed Scamarcio to navigate the industry in his role since 2012 as producer.
