Dataset supporting the University of Southampton doctoral Thesis "Observational and simulation studies of the structure of Earth's magnetotail during periods of northward IMF" by Laura Fryer.
This dataset contains a movie created to support the description of the analysis in Chapter 4. The movie contains the entire simulation run at a 5-minute resolution, where each time shows a 3D plot of solar wind and magnetospheric field lines from the simulation run in GUMICS. The Figures are referenced from the time since the IMF By sign change passed the nose of the magnetopause. The background colour indicates the log of the magnitude of the magnetic field strength in the X-Y and X-Z planes. The field line traces are shown in orange. The field lines have each been traced using the same starting points, at 10 RE intervals down the X axis, and additionally in a spherical shell above 60 latitude (in 10 increments) and in 45 longitude increments around the ionospheric boundary (at a radius of 3.7 RE). Note that as a consequence, we choose to observe the change in topology at set locations within the modelled magnetosphere, rather than the propagation of the same magnetic field lines throughout the run.
