Any age assessment should be considered in relation to domestic and international children’s rights obligations which require that an individualised assessment of whether the proposed referral for and approach to age assessment is in the best interests of the child and proportionate in the circumstances.A careful assessment should be conducted in each case of how proportionate it would be to carry out an invasive age assessment on a young person whose mental health is already fragile, bearing in mind also the likely additional negative impacts of Covid19 and lockdown restrictions alongside systematic trauma linked to routine procedures related to the asylum system
