Motorcycle simulator solutions for rider research
Motorcyclists represent one of the most vulnerable forms of road user. In the UK, motorcyclists are generally considered to be around 51 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured (KSI) than car drivers (Department for Transport 2007). Recent data also indicate that motorcyclists are involved in 9.5% of all recorded collisions (Department for Transport 2012a) and account for 21.5% of KSI statistics (Department for Transport 2012a). Over the last decade motorcycles have only contributed to around 1% of the 300 billion vehicle miles travelled in any single year (Department for Transport 2012b), further compounding the underlying vulnerability of these road users compared to other forms of transport. While many incidents may be caused by other road users (Clarke et al. 2007; Crundall, Crundall, Clarke and Shahar 2012), a large proportion of motorcycle accidents can be attributed to rider error.
