Evolution of simulators in transportation human factors
One of the aims of this book was to provide opportunities to learn from the simulator-based applications across domains to see what lessons could be gleaned – and to see if there are aspects of simulator set up and functionality, performance assessment and use generally – that can accelerate efficacy in one or more domains. The book has drawn upon the expertise and experience of many chapter authors and, therefore, highlights different aspects of simulation use rather than covering every research and training application.
It is clear from the contributions in this book that the application of simulation across transport domains varies considerably. Sources of this variance cut across the physical infrastructure involved, the system flexibility and cost, the use cases (namely, research vs. training), the types of technical and non-technical skills under assessment, the assessment methods, and the use of other actors/confederates, among others.
