Abstract
Drawn from a qualitative study of 33 rural migrant women in two popular destination cities in China, Beijing and Shantou, and two sending provinces, Hebei and Henan, this chapter seeks to investigate how Chinese rural migrant women negotiate gender, citizenship, and precarity in the vicissitudes of their everyday life during the rural–urban migration processes. In particular, it explores the way in which they draw on different resources to establish a sense of selfhood and belonging and to cope with imposed unpalatable conditions. The findings throws light on the complex process of identity construction and performance in everyday negotiation, especially among the most exploited, oppressed, and vulnerable people in society.
