Follow up of infants after discharge to home from neonatal care
Follow up of infants after discharge to home from neonatal care
An important role of Neonatologists and Paediatricians is reviewing high risk infants after discharge to provide ongoing clinical care and to monitor later outcomes. The most important reason for such follow up is clinical need but the process does provide additional opportunities. These include determining the long term effects of new medical treatments in trials, comparisons of outcomes for performance monitoring and healthcare planning. Identifying infants with problems in this way offers the opportunity for early intervention that may improve later outcomes and is beneficial to the parents. Depending on the model adopted, follow up can be costly and this expenditure must be justified by considering the benefits obtained.
