The only way isn't Essex, but it may be one of them...: grooved Ware, Beakers and long-distance connections in southern Britain
This paper offers a contribution to matters of long-distance connectivity during the Late Neolithic through a study of selected Grooved Ware assemblages and other elements of material culture from sites in southern Britain. A specific focus is placed on that intriguing period towards the end of the Grooved Ware tradition an in which early Beakers appear, principally the 25th and 25th centuries cal BC, and begins with two Wiltshire sites with Grooved Ware assemblages which show evidence for long-distance connections. These two sites - Durrington Walls and West Kennet palisade enclosures - are the starting point for our arguments. In both cases, the contexts containing the Grooved Ware are relatively well dated by multiple radiocarbon dates, placing their ceramics late in the period of Grooved Ware use.
