READ ME File For 'Wear and Efficiency Test Data for Dry-Running Gears' Dataset DOI: 10.5258/SOTON/D2548 ReadMe Author: Thomas Finch, University of Southampton This dataset supports the thesis entitled "Assessing the Wear and Friction Properties of Self-Lubricating Coatings in Dry-Running Aerospace Actuation Gearboxes" AWARDED BY: University of Southampton DATE OF AWARD: 2023 DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA This dataset contains: 1) Measurement data taken from gears that have been operated with self-lubricating coatings in dry-running conditions. Three teeth were monitored on each of the three gears in the test gearbox. Three coatings were tested. The wear measurement data folder contains a separate folder for each coating at each torque load tested. Within each of these folders a further set of folders provides the measurement data at each inspection interval according to the number of test cycles performed. Measurements were taken using a Klingelnberg P26 gear inspector. The standard .mka files have been converted to tab delimited .txt. Each inspection file is accompanied by a photograph (.jpg format) of the tooth surface under magnification. 2) Post-test SEM, EDS, and Raman inspection data of the tested gear teeth. On completion of each wear test, teeth from the tested gears were inspected using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. SEM images are from a Tescan Vega 3 and are in .tif format. EDS data was collected using an Oxford Instruments INCA and is provided using .doc reports exported from the EDS software. The folders are structured according to the coating and tooth in question. The Raman data was collected using a Horiba XploRA and has been combined onto a single .xlsx file, with separate worksheets for each tooth examined. The worksheets are labelled according to the coating, gear, and tooth numbers. 3) Efficiency test data for C/Cr coated gears in dry-running at 20C and -40C. The data has been combined into a single .xlsx file. Separate worksheets are provided for each test case and are labelled according to coating and test condition. The data is time-based and taken from a bespoke data logging system.
