ACHILLES: handling uncertainty in railway earthworks maintenance and renewals
ACHILLES: handling uncertainty in railway earthworks maintenance and renewals
Earthworks around the world, many of which date from the 19th century, are subject to the combined impacts of ageing and increasingly extreme weather conditions, increasing the need for condition monitoring, maintenance and enhancement within limited budgets. The ACHILLES research programme is addressing these challenges, developing improved understanding of earthworks behaviour, methods of monitoring, simulation and modelling, and design and decision support tools. Decisions about how and when best to intervene to extend the life of an earthworks asset are complicated by uncertainty about their likely lifespans and times to failure. This uncertainty has been addressed through the development of a probabilistic approach to the assessment of the varying expected costs over time of asset failures and interventions, and their comparison to identify the most economically advantageous timing of interventions.
