Equality and diversity in our student engagement practice: Radical possibilities to reaching racial and religious equity in higher education
Equality and diversity in our student engagement practice: Radical possibilities to reaching racial and religious equity in higher education
This chapter will demonstrate why being considerate of, and always starting with, equity and diversity agendas in mind within our student engagement activities is a necessary consideration for practitioners within higher education (HE), particularly given the long-standing disparities we see in the outcomes and experiences of underrepresented students. This chapter specifically focuses on racial and religious student diversity, where conceptualisations of ‘the student experience’ have only recently started to consider their place in such discourse. Whilst certain political rhetoric seems intent to limit this possibility, progress made in this area is showcased by highlighting research and case studies which thoughtfully shed light onto these students’ experiences. The chapter also provides recommendations to define, decolonise and defend initiatives geared towards equity and diversity in order to accelerate our work in educational development to support racially and religiously minoritised students’ success and progression through HE.
