The complex effects of sewage sludge pretreatment methods on subsequent fermentation and nutrient release
Utilising sewage sludge for value-added products such as biogas, volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and struvite can enhance the sustainability of wastewater treatment plants. However, the low biodegradability of sludge leads to low yield and efficiency of target products and a higher demand for residual waste disposal. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the types of alkaline and thermal pretreatment on the enhancement of subsequent fermentation of sewage sludge for simultaneous VFAs production and nutrient recovery. It was found that Na2CO3 pretreatment resulted in 89% higher soluble phosphate yields than that by NaOH at pH 11, indicating the influence of the alkaline type on nutrient release. During the subsequent fermentation, the highest solubilisation of COD (76% sCOD/tCOD) and phosphate release (54% PO43--P/TP) were achieved with either combined Na2CO3-thermal pretreatment or Na2CO3 pretreatment alone. However, thermal-Na2CO3 pretreatment led to the lowest VFAs production, suggests potential inhibition from substances generated during solid solubilisation with Na2CO3 treatment. Therefore, it is concluded that pretreatment methods must be investigated in conjunction with subsequent fermentation and targeted chemicals to ensure that enhanced sludge solubilisation translates into improved chemical production
