Nostalgia as a moral emotion
Nostalgia as a moral emotion
Nostalgia, a sentimental longing for one’s meaningful past, is a moral emotion. Nostalgia’s defining feature is sociality. In nostalgizing, the mind is “peopled,” as one brings to mind momentous events from their life involving close others. Sociality is evident at the trait level (among dispositionally nostalgic persons) and at the state level (when nostalgia is induced experimentally). Nostalgia confers morality-related outcomes, such as cooperation, intergroup contact, and empathy. Further, nostalgia confers morality-related outcomes (i.e., helping, charitable donations, prejudice reduction) through empathy. Research linking nostalgia to the moral foundations theory is nascent, but preliminary evidence indicates that nostalgia, through empathy, augments sensitivity to moral concern, which intensifies punitiveness toward moral transgressors.
