Introduction: humanitarianism and inequality - a re-orientation
Introduction: humanitarianism and inequality - a re-orientation
The Handbook on Humanitarianism and Inequality gives an overview over inequalities in humanitarian contexts. Based in criticism of colonialism and coloniality it broadens and reorients the understanding of humanitarianism. Section 1 focuses on historical and geopolitical aspects and surveys definitions and meanings of humanitarianism. Section 2 introduces a wide range of humanitarian actors which include governmental, inter-governmental, non-governmental, faith-based, and secular organisations, as well as diaspora networks and self-organised volunteers who are engaged in humanitarian action. Employing an intersectional perspective, Section 3 looks at the people involved in providing humanitarian aid and those obtaining humanitarian assistance. Section 4 examines inequalities a wide range of persistent and newly emerging issues (for example, climate change, pandemics, technology). Section 5 highlights different experiences of and approaches to humanitarianism in different world regions. Section 6 considers knowledge creation, ethics, evaluation, dissemination, methods, and data to understand humanitarian action, and identifies future research needs.
