Phase kinetics modelling of titanium alloys undergoing plasticity induced transformation

Phase kinetics modelling of titanium alloys undergoing plasticity induced transformation
Phase kinetics modelling of titanium alloys undergoing plasticity induced transformation

A model to predict the kinetics of α+β → β and β → α+β reactions in titanium alloys undergoing Plasticity Induced Transformation (PiTTi) is presented. The approach employs the local equilibrium assumption at the interface and can be applied to ternary and higher order systems. Rigorous thermodynamic equilibrium is ensured by coupling the multi-component diffusion computations to Thermo-calc databases. The model provides the transformed volume fraction and phase concentrations for a variety of heat treatment conditions. The variations in the concentration of β phase are employed to predict its ability to transform into martensite employing a modified version of the theory of Ghosh and Olson for martensite nucleation, [Acta. Met. Vol. 42, pp. 3361, 1994]. The computed optimum heat treatment schedules leading to PiTTi are presented for Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al (wt.%).
