Collective social entrepreneurship as a tool for decolonization: ethnographic case studies from pesantren in Indonesia
Collective social entrepreneurship as a tool for decolonization: ethnographic case studies from pesantren in Indonesia
This thesis explores the role of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Indonesia in the ongoing decolonization process by providing inclusive education for underprivileged children. It examines how three specific pesantren have adopted collective social entrepreneurship to counteract educational marginalization. The findings reveal a unique business model that harnesses educational ties to bolster the pesantren’s operations, moving away from a reliance on donations. Each pesantren has developed distinct approaches to reclaim economic autonomy and foster community development. The study highlights the entrepreneurial initiatives of these pesantren, their contributions to economic development, and the challenges they face in preserving indigenous knowledge and socio-ethical values. The research employs an ethnographic case study methodology, allowing for a nuanced understanding of the subjective experiences and social realities of the pesantren communities. This research proposes new perspectives on the interplay between entrepreneurship and decolonization at an organizational level. It showcases how grassroots-based, self-sufficient social entrepreneurship serves as a tool to challenge the persisting marginalization caused by colonial power. By examining the context of religious education institutions, the research details the process of reclaiming economic autonomy, developing cooperative resilience, and creating indigenous entrepreneurial networks. This exploration provides a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms through which decolonization is actualized using collective social entrepreneurial approaches.
