Does your mind wander? Where does it go? How far is too far? What separates disorder/order, 'abnormality'/‘normality’? This drawing is one of several outcomes of #MagicCarpet, which explores mind wandering and how it relates to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and visual art. The Arts Council-funded Unlimited commission is led by Dr Kai Syng Tan in collaboration with Professor of Psychiatry Philip Asherson at King’s College London. Referencing Surrealism and Situationism, this drawing is a snapshot of the artist’s hyperactive mind. #MagicCarpet has been enjoyed at South London Gallery, Nesta’s People Powered Future Health Innovation Showcase and Arts in Mind Festival. Next up is the Unlimited Festival at the Southbank Centre and 5th EUNETHYDIS Conference in Edinburgh. Kai uses art to instigate new conversations and to ask new questions. She has been featured in 450 shows including Biennale of Sydney and Documenta, at the Royal Geographical Society and MOMA New York. Collections include Museum of London and Fukuoka Art Museum. Kai completed her PhD at UCL Slade School. She is a research committee member of the UK Adult ADHD Network and advisor to PsychART @kaisyngtan http://www.wesatonamat.weebly.com
