Developing the business case for smartcards in transport
In this article the authors examine the application of smart cards in public transit fare collection systems in terms of their effectiveness. The authors note that the advantages and disadvantages of smart card use are more affected by market conditions rather than by technical specifications. The authors describe a working group established in the U.K. which cpnvened for the purpose of developing a process by which organizations considering smart card program would be able to better understand the costs and benefits of the programs.
