Design of sub-decibel-loss and fabrication-tolerant silicon photonic bi-layer grating couplers
A strategy for the design and optimization of bi-layer grating couplers is presented and applied to a 220 nm thick silicon photonic platform. Coupling efficiency values exceeding –0.3 dB are numerically demonstrated with either the use of an amorphous silicon or germanium overlay.
