Realising decent work for (domestic) platform workers: a human rights approach

Realising decent work for (domestic) platform workers: a human rights approach
Realising decent work for (domestic) platform workers: a human rights approach
The emergence and growth of platform work poses a serious threat to the goal of securing decent work for all, as it is associated with heightened surveillance, poor pay and conditions, and the deskilling and casualisation of work. Existing labour law responses have struggled to adequately protect platform workers against these risks. This article assesses the prospects of adopting a human rights approach to the regulation of platform work, with a focus on workers performing childcare or other domestic tasks facilitated through online platforms. It examines the potential of human rights to help secure access to employment protections and facilitate collective action for this group of vulnerable workers.

Abstract

The emergence and growth of platform work poses a serious threat to the goal of securing decent work for all, as it is associated with heightened surveillance, poor pay and conditions, and the deskilling and casualisation of work. Existing labour law responses have struggled to adequately protect platform workers against these risks. This article assesses the prospects of adopting a human rights approach to the regulation of platform work, with a focus on workers performing childcare or other domestic tasks facilitated through online platforms. It examines the potential of human rights to help secure access to employment protections and facilitate collective action for this group of vulnerable workers.
