Towards rapid bedside medical diagnosis using vibrational spectroscopy

Towards rapid bedside medical diagnosis using vibrational spectroscopy
Towards rapid bedside medical diagnosis using vibrational spectroscopy
Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome can be diagnosed in preterm infants using the ratio of the lipids, lecithin and sphingomyelin, found in the lungs. Current measurements rely on mass spectrometry; however, mid-infrared (Mid-IR) and Raman spectroscopies offer an alternative rapid measurement technique. A methodology for point-of-care diagnosis using custom ATR silicon chips and machine learning is presented, to enable improved long-term patient outcomes.

Abstract

Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome can be diagnosed in preterm infants using the ratio of the lipids, lecithin and sphingomyelin, found in the lungs. Current measurements rely on mass spectrometry; however, mid-infrared (Mid-IR) and Raman spectroscopies offer an alternative rapid measurement technique. A methodology for point-of-care diagnosis using custom ATR silicon chips and machine learning is presented, to enable improved long-term patient outcomes.
