Cutaneous leishmaniasis: a case report and a review of the subject
Cutaneous leishmaniasis: a case report and a review of the subject
Cutaneous leishmaniasis, transmitted via sandfly bites, is common in tropical countries but rare in the United Kingdom. Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis is acquired in Asia, Africa or Europe and is usually self-healing. New World cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis is acquired in Central and South America and may be a more debilitating disease due to a destructive host immune response. We describe a six year old boy with Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis presenting after a holiday to Afghanistan.
