Integrating clinical history with allergy tests

Integrating clinical history with allergy tests
Integrating clinical history with allergy tests

To make an accurate diagnosis of food allergy, the patient's clinical history needs to be integrated with their IgE-sensitization test results and, where necessary, an oral food challenge. For many patients, skin, prick testing or specific IgE to whole allergens will be the only tests required. Where the diagnosis is still unclear, specific IgE to allergen components or, where available Basophil Activation Testing or Mast cell Activation Tests may be helpful. For some patients it will be necessary to undertake a food challenge test to family rule out or make a diagnosis of food allergy. In this article, we look at how the clinical presentation can be integrated with the IgE-sensitization test results to arrive at an accurate diagnosis of food allergy.
