Screening rites: video essay
Screening rites: video essay
How does the process of screening orchestral music direct, shape or focus audience attention? In this video essay, I analyse a small section from three different BBC Proms broadcasts of The Rite of Spring and show how different visual constructions of the sequence shape musical appreciation. I then build towards some foundational principles of orchestral visualisation. I also consider broader approaches to screening concerts including post-Covid-19 implications for music in an age where audiences will increasingly encounter orchestral music via screened presentation rather than through physically attending live concerts.

Abstract

I then build towards some foundational principles of orchestral visualisation.
