Abstract

This paper makes a contribution to recent debates on the importance of gender in sustainable management education (SME). Gender is recognized to be a fundamental component of social order with material and ideational effects, yet is poorly integrated in SME. To help resolve this deficit, we review three paths to advance gender integration - a framework and theorization which identifies how gender shapes institutional, organizational and individual levels of social life; a critical review of the external and internal organizational tensions which contribute to the low level of sustainability and gender integration by business schools; and an assessment of external facilitators’ provisions on gender and sustainability. A set of propositions is articulated for each of these paths prompting future research avenues. We conclude with a discussion of how to lower the risk of giving students access to gender debates.
