The online safety act 2023
The online safety act 2023
This Special Issue gives the floor to a group of academics who have followed the journey of the Online Safety Act (hereinafter the OSA) from its introduction as a bill, through various legislative amendments and who have meticulously dissected the Act as enacted. The articles aim to unpack the impact that the OSA may have on various potent issues, raising questions such as what is actually meant by harm? What is the effect of content moderation on freedom of speech? Will the regulatory approach adopted by the OSA operate to curtail the powerful online platforms’ behaviour? Is there scope for effective cooperation between the enforcement of the OSA and other online safety legislation such as the EU’s Digital Safety Act? Beyond these overarching questions the papers also identify challenges arising with specific types of content, including pornography, and question whether the OSA will operate to affect a real difference in keeping us safe from illegal and/or harmful content?
