Critical realism in applied linguistics
This edited volume on Critical Realism (CR) in Applied Linguistics (AL) aims to show, through conceptual and empirical means, how current AL scholars can benefit from in-depth engagement with both epistemological and ontological issues grounding AL work. The chapter contributors aim to develop more effective research strategies and avenues for AL research by collectively adopting CR, an anti-empiricist philosophical framework based on three core research principles––ontological realism, epistemic relativism, and judgmental rationalism––principles which each contributor will unpack and relate to AL research in their respective chapter.

Abstract
This edited volume on Critical Realism (CR) in Applied Linguistics (AL) aims to show, through conceptual and empirical means, how current AL scholars can benefit from in-depth engagement with both epistemological and ontological issues grounding AL work. The chapter contributors aim to develop more effective research strategies and avenues for AL research by collectively adopting CR, an anti-empiricist philosophical framework based on three core research principles––ontological realism, epistemic relativism, and judgmental rationalism––principles which each contributor will unpack and relate to AL research in their respective chapter.
