READ ME File For 'Dataset to support the thesis titled "The Role of Particle Characteristics in Determining Transfer Efficiency of the Biological Carbon Pump"' Dataset DOI: 10.5258/SOTON/D3424 ReadMe Author: JACK WILLIAMS, University of Southampton This dataset supports the thesis entitled "The Role of Particle Characteristics in Determining Transfer Efficiency of the Biological Carbon Pump" AWARDED BY: University of Southampton DATE OF AWARD: 2025 DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA This dataset contains three comma separated values (.csv) files for Supplementary Datasets S4.1, S4.2, S.4.3. These data tables accompany chapter 4 of the above mentioned thesis. Supplementary Table S4.1 contains environmental data tested for covariance with multivariate particle composition across 27 Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP) profiles, each with three depth bins. There are nine columns in this csv. This data relates to environmental variables assessed in the non-metric multidimensional scaling plot (NMDS) of Figure 4.6. Migrant strength was determined from Acoustic Doppler Current Profile (ADCP) data, total zooplankton concentrations and particle abundance efficiencies from Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP) data, and remaining variables from Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) data. Supplementary Table S4.2 contains the counts, concentrations, and biomasses of particles in 20 m depth bins, from Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP) profile data. This data is shown both for total particle counts, concentrations, and biomass, but also for counts, concentrations, and biomass of each particle cluster distinguished by PCA analysis. Supplementary Table S4.3 contains total particle abundance efficiency and abundance efficiencies of each particle cluster for each of 27 Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP) deployments, as well as the latitude of each deployment. Date of data collection: 22/02/2023 - 26/03/2023 Information about geographic location of data collection: Along a meridional transect of the Atlantic Ocean. Exact latitudes and longitudes are shown in SUpplementary Table S4.1.
