Digital fashion and sustainability: exploring the intersection of technology and responsible fashion systems: analysing the environmental, social, and cultural impacts of digital fashion
This research explores the role of digital technology in fostering sustainability within the fashion industry, contributing to the concept of prosperity in fashion. By examining the environmental, social, and cultural impacts of digital fashion, we aim to provide an understanding of its potential and limitations. Interviews with digital fashion practitioners reveal consensus on the transformative potential of digital tools, including revolutionising design workflows and reducing physical resource consumption.
Our study highlights innovative applications of digital technology in fashion design and production, such as zero-waste cutting techniques in marker-making and the use of 3D software to create precise mock-ups of styles, patterns, and colours for buyers. Digital visualisation tools further enhance merchandising and marketing, transforming garments into CGI, film, and animation, which can reduce reliance on physical runway shows and photo shoots. In retail, digital transformation bridges physical and digital environments (phygital), enhancing customer experiences and operational efficiency.
However, overconsumption remains a significant challenge in the fashion industry. While digital tools offer substantial benefits, they do not inherently address systemic issues. Ultra-fast fashion brands like Shein exemplify how digital technologies can accelerate production, exacerbating environmental concerns. Additionally, the energy-intensive infrastructure required for NFTs, digital assets, cloud storage, data systems, mobile apps, and analytics presents a critical yet often overlooked sustainability issue, sometimes exceeding national energy consumption levels.
To fully realise the potential of digital fashion in promoting sustainability, this research advocates for integrating technological innovations with systemic change. A balanced approach is essential—leveraging digital tools for creativity and efficiency while addressing broader environmental and social impacts.
In conclusion, this research contributes to defining prosperity in fashion by exploring how digital technology can support sustainable practices. It emphasises the importance of comprehensive strategies that integrate technological advancements with systemic reforms, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fosters a more prosperous, responsible and sustainable future for the fashion industry.
