Extending the cell-in-series method for accelerated ageing studies of vanadium flow batteries
Extending the cell-in-series method for accelerated ageing studies of vanadium flow batteries
Understanding the ageing mechanisms of vanadium flow batteries is essential towards lifespan predictions, manufacture improvements and long-term performance optimisation. Studying degradation under normal operating conditions involves prolonged testing which is costly and often impractical. Therefore, there is a need for accelerated ageing techniques that can simulate the long-term effects of various stress factors in a shortened timeframe. In this work, the ageing of a vanadium flow battery cell was accelerated by continuously charging at high state of charge. This was achieved by extending the cell-in-series method, which involves hydraulically connecting the flow cell of interest to a second flow cell that continuously discharges the electrolyte. State of charge was followed by an open circuit cell or set by coulomb counting. This methodology can be applied to perform accelerated stress tests on other flow batteries.
