General aspects and fundamentals of flow batteries

General aspects and fundamentals of flow batteries
General aspects and fundamentals of flow batteries

The concept of flow batteries (FBs) is introduced and their operating principles are summarized. The importance of FBs to the storage of renewable energy is highlighted, together with a description of existing and expected applications. The advantages and limitations of FBs are contrasted with other types of battery, and environmental benefits of FBs are highlighted. Existing and developing FBs are classified and illustrated by typical examples. The ideal characteristics of efficient and viable FBs are reviewed. Critical properties of electrodes, cells, modular cell stacks, and balance of plant are summarized. Operational parameters and techno-economic figures of merit are highlighted. The importance of thermodynamics, electrode kinetics, electrical resistance, components of cell voltage and ion transport, and engineering aspects of FBs are concisely explained. Recent trends in R & D are summarized and needs to advance their technology are suggested.
