Active plasmonics
Active plasmonics
Propagating plasmon-polariton excitations in metal nanostructures are emerging as a new type of information carrier. However, we will only be able to speak about ‘plasmonics’ in the same way that we speak about ‘photonics’ when efficient techniques for active manipulation of SPP signals are identified. This chapter presents a concept for nanoscale functional elements to actively switch SPP signals.

Abstract
Propagating plasmon-polariton excitations in metal nanostructures are emerging as a new type of information carrier. However, we will only be able to speak about ‘plasmonics’ in the same way that we speak about ‘photonics’ when efficient techniques for active manipulation of SPP signals are identified. This chapter presents a concept for nanoscale functional elements to actively switch SPP signals.
