Quantum efficiency and background loss in low thulium concentration silica fibres

The influence of low thulium concentration in silica fibre on the two-for-one cross-relaxation process and background propagation loss was studied. A two-for-one cross-relaxation process (quantum efficiency 1.18) was observed even in 0.2 wt.% thulium-doped fibre.
