Rethinking cultural imperialism: the Ibermedia programme
Rethinking cultural imperialism: the Ibermedia programme
The Ibermedia Programme is the main multilateral coproduction fund for Latin American cinema. Set up in 1989, it comprises 14 Spanish-speaking nations, Brazil and Portugal, and it has Spain as the major contributor to the fund. Ibermedia has sometimes been seen as a part of Spain's audiovisual re-conquest of the Latin American market. However, this chapter aims to explore Ibermedia from a perspective not yet undertaken by scholarship: under the Spanish international cooperation policy as established by the 23/1998 Law. By so doing, this chapter seeks to question whether the programme has indeed benefitted the Spanish interests in the region further or, to the contrary, has succeeded in creating an Iberoamerican audiovisual space.
