Will the sale of a rare manuscript rescue Jewish studies in France?
On October 19, one of the oldest medieval Hebrew manuscripts preserved in France was sold in New York. The Mahzor, known as "Luzzatto"—named after the Italian scholar Samuel David Luzzatto, one of its previous owners—had been one of the jewels of the Library of the Alliance Israélite Universelle since 1870. In an op-ed published in Le Monde before the sale, a group of researchers and public figures called for it to be classified as a "work of major heritage interest" and to remain in France. But to no avail. A private, anonymous collector acquired it for more than eight million euros. Noëmie Duhaut reflects on these events and asks the question they raise: Why are archives concerning Jewish life, culture, and politics, as well as research on these subjects, struggling to exist in France?
