MV Estonia: numerical modelling of bow arrangement collapse sequence
MV Estonia: numerical modelling of bow arrangement collapse sequence
The paper presents a numerical assessment of the progressive failure sequence of the bow visor and ramp of MV Estonia, a passenger ferry that sank on September 28, 1994. While a thorough investigation was conducted from 1994 to 1997, new investigative actives have been launched by accident investigation bureaus from Estonia, Sweden, and Finland. These new activities aim to analyze and model the sequence of events using state of the art modelling tools to gather deeper insight into the accident. Paper presents the simulation models to assess the failure sequence of the bow area, discusses the initial outcomes and compares the damages to the those reported at the visor and ramp salvaged from the sea bottom.
