A comparison of actuation strategies in a combined active-passive absorption control system
This paper presents a comparative analysis of different actuation strategies in a combined active-passive absorption system for broadband noise control. The system consists of a multi-layered structure with a porous layer, a micro-perforated panel (MPP), and an air cavity. An active structural acoustic control system is implemented to work in combination with the passive measures, allowing the system to maintain absorption performance over a wide frequency range. The presented study investigates the effectiveness of actuating the MPP versus actuating the backplate behind the air cavity, for different passive treatment configurations. The study was performed using numerical simulations based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). A wave-based active control strategy was used to minimize the reflected wave, with the electrical power consumption kept constant across all active-passive design configurations to allow comparison. The results indicate significant differences in absorption performance depending on the location of actuation and the configuration of the passive layers. This highlights the need for careful tuning of both passive and active design parameters in a combined active-passive control treatment.
