Exploring the causal link between asthma and anxiety: a Mendelian randomization study
Asthma and anxiety are prevalent conditions that substantially impact public health. Growing evidence from epidemiological studies has suggested strong associations between these two conditions. Ourrecent meta-analysis indicated that the pooled prevalence of anxiety symptoms in individuals withasthma was 32%, showing that the risk of coexisting anxiety is significantly higher in asthma patients compared to non-asthmatic controls.[1] Further, our recent work suggests that severe asthma patients are associated with higher levels of anxiety, and inflammatory responses may underlie this comorbid condition. However, the causal association between asthma and anxiety has not been established. This study aimed to investigate whether a direct causal relationship exists between asthma and anxiety using Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis.
