Recent advances in modelling nonlinear seismic performance of corrosion-damaged RC bridges

This keynote presentation explores advances in modelling the nonlinear seismic performance of corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete (RC) bridges, focusing on nonuniformly corroded circular RC piers. Experimental and numerical methods are used to assess how corrosion affects the dynamic properties and drift behaviour of RC columns. Tests on large-scale prototypes revealed that higher corrosion levels increased natural frequencies and reduced cyclic capacities, while damping ratios remained largely unchanged. Calibrated nonlinear finite element (FE) models simulated key failure modes and nonuniform, age-related corrosion. Findings highlight the need for updated seismic assessments for RC bridges.
