English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) Communication
English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) refers to the widespread use of English resources for transcultural communicative purposes in numerous contexts and domains across the world. The term, however, has also come to designate a field of studies, a way of theorizing (English) language use, and a set of critical perspectives for educational contexts in which English plays a role as either the object of study or the medium through which disciplinary knowledge is learned and taught. This article explores the emergence and evolution of ELF research, outlining contemporary debates and identifying possible paths forward.
