• We compared facilitated and self-directed psychoeducation interventions for bipolar disorder.
•There was a steeper slope of change in weekly self-rated mania scores in the FIMM group.
•Knowledge of illness improved more rapidly in the facilitated group.
•Illness knowledge was positively related to time spent well.
•Illness knowledge may represent a proximal measure of intervention efficacy.
