Pedagogy as medium: WSA Painting Prize, a case study
Public-facing exhibitions within higher-education art contexts highlight the subtle tensions between pedagogy, research, and professional practice. Exhibitions and prize events provide opportunities for emerging artists and for staff to test teaching and research models, while also functioning as one of the institution’s primary public interfaces. Such initiatives—particularly university gallery and prize exhibitions—operate at the intersection of institutional reputation, student opportunity, research ambition, and pedagogical experiment. Using the WSA Painting Prize as a case study, this paper analyses how a specific initiative can serve simultaneously as a learning platform, a research vehicle, and a mode of institutional self-representation within the wider field of contemporary art and curatorial practice.
