Autonomy in the lawyer-client relationship

Autonomy in the lawyer-client relationship
Autonomy in the lawyer-client relationship
Autonomy within the lawyer-client relationship is explored using classical and contemporary philosophical approaches, examining the cognitive, external, and moral dimensions of autonomy. Theoretical models such as those developed by William Simon and Andrew Boon suggest ways that legal practitioners can navigate the tension between respecting client autonomy and having sufficient personal autonomy to act ethically. The concept of relational autonomy situates clients within their social and ethical contexts. This account of autonomy highlights how client autonomy is shaped and supported by interpersonal relationships and responsibilities.

Abstract

Autonomy within the lawyer-client relationship is explored using classical and contemporary philosophical approaches, examining the cognitive, external, and moral dimensions of autonomy. Theoretical models such as those developed by William Simon and Andrew Boon suggest ways that legal practitioners can navigate the tension between respecting client autonomy and having sufficient personal autonomy to act ethically. The concept of relational autonomy situates clients within their social and ethical contexts. This account of autonomy highlights how client autonomy is shaped and supported by interpersonal relationships and responsibilities.
