Urgent need for gender-sensitive & climate-informed policies for food insecurity in rural communities in Ghana - SEED policy brief
Urgent need for gender-sensitive & climate-informed policies for food insecurity in rural communities in Ghana - SEED policy brief
Food insecurity in Ghana’s Northern Region is severe and worsening, particularly in rural communities like Pishigu (Karaga District). A 2025 study of 384 women found that 93.4% experienced moderate or severe food insecurity, and 52.6% were severely food insecure - far above national averages and similar to low-income countries in the West Africa region. Climate change is a major driver, disrupting agriculture and livelihoods, exacerbating gender inequalities, with inevitable consequences on population health.
